Halo Reach Matchmaking

The glory of Halo Reach can only be described in it's online play against other Halo enthusiasts. Bungie has mixed up the playlists for matchmaking in Halo Reach to accommodate for every type of player. It has a list of games for social players, a list of games for players who just want to have some fun, and a hardcore playlist for those gun-hoe gamers. I love this about the matchmaking games because I know exactly what I'm getting when I go in to the countdown. No more getting dominated by pro's when you enter a game because they have a lower level then they should. All equal.

I will list all of the separate types of game types and a brief description of how the game type works.

Halo Reach Matchmaking - Competitive

The first option when you pull up your playlist will be the Competitive tab. This tab, although misleading by the name, is the list of social games. By social I mean that you can bring your guest in and there is no ranking system outside of earning credits. This playlist is in contradiction to itself in the fact that it list all of the normally 'competitive' game-types yet you will find they are normally not competitive at all due to the social aspect. Another thing you will notice on these game-types is that you can bring in the whole party! Therefore no one should be surprised when they start seeing some 10+ K/d ratios. The system can and will be cheated. Ok, lets get going.

  • Rumble Pit - You may enter this playlist with all 8 people in your party. This is the free for all of matchmaking. Eight people and they are all alone for themselves. This will feature a wide variety of game-types all geared towards single achievements. You will find this game-type turn into a boosting playlist as time goes on. A harvest for credit farmers.
  • Team Slayer - Yep, the old famous Team Slayer has now been made into a joke! You can enter the playlist with all 8 players and play your friends through the playlist. All game-types will be geared to killing and none to objective. This is geared out in a 4v4 format and the win limit will be 50.
  • Team Objective - Same set up as slayer.. You can bring all 8 players in with a party and just duke it out with your boys ( or girls). This playlist is however extremely fun if you go in alone. This playlist features 4v4 and focuses on all objective type game-types like CTF, OddBall, and Territories.
  • Multi-team - This is still the crazy onslaught it used to be. Now that the voting is enabled be insured you will end up playing a completely noobish game-type every-time. This playlist features 12 players, who you CAN bring in with one party. The set up is 6 teams of 2. So it is 2v2v2v2v2v2. This could potentially be a blast if coordinated correctly!
  • Big Team Slayer - Want to boost your KD? Play some Big Team Slayer! This is 8v8 and has the ability to play with all 16 players from a party. This has every type of game-type imaginable, all played on the biggest maps. My advise on this game-type? GET IN A TANK. or you will be killed by one...
  • Invasion - Now this is a new one. I love this game-type! I love it so much I wrote an entire article about it. Halo Reach - Invasion. It is 6v6 and features a series of territory games that has a hint of CTF at the end. A definite check out!

Halo Reach Matchmaking - Cooperative

Yes, this is for the individual who wants to work with other humans as opposed to killing them. This entire playlist for matchmaking is based off of Firefight. It only has 2 separate items to play from, but they have different goals.

  • Firefight - This is a playlist in matchmaking that allows you to play firefight with individuals you might not know! It is a 4 player objective mission against the covenant. You can enter by yourself or with however many people up to 4. However many you don't have will be filled with a random from Xbox Live. There are several different types of firefight you can vote on prior to the match. Some include unlimited lives, therefore granting you victory. Some have limited lives. And some are objective based. My favorite is generator defense.
  • Score Attack - I am not quite sure this is in matchmaking, but it allows you to go in by yourself and play firefight. It is straight survival. That means you don't have to go attack them, they WILL come attack you. You can pick from different maps and game types that determine your power-ups and weapons but it ultimately comes down to you having to survive waves of covenant for 10 minutes. This is an excellent way to farm credits.

Halo Reach Matchmaking - Arena

Yes, it is finally time to start playing some real Halo. This is where the hardcore gamers are. If you are enjoying playing scrubs or fighting off elites in firefight, don't mess around with Arena. This is the new ranked playlist of Halo Reach Matchmaking. It offers two venues of real competitive play. Doubles and Team. The Arena system goes by season, so your skill will always be where it needs to be. In these seasons they rank you based off of your gameplay in the playlist and then rank you in brackets where you play people who are your level. You get rated in the playlist by playing at least 3 games a day per playlist you wish to get ranked in. It takes your top 3 scores from each days play and averages them for your final score. So that means you can play with your scrub friends because it is always individual based. You can play 6500 games a day and only win 3 and get a good rating off of those games. Pretty much play these as frequent as possible in hopes of locking in a few well rated games a day to achieve placements in the good brackets. The Arena rating is based off many things including kills, assists, death tally, and if you win or not.

  • Doubles Arena - 2v2 Go in with a friend or by yourself. The gametypes will all be slayer type and played to 25. Unlike other playlist you can only go in with a max of 2 players.
  • Team Arena - 4v4  Go in with your team and communicate as you play other teams trying to get their good ratings in. All game types will be slayer and played to 50. You can only go in with a maximum of 4 players.
