How to Tether the Iphone 3GS 4.0.1 For Wifi Tethering

When I first began cruising through the internet trying to find where an article or video to explain to me how to jailbreak and tether my Iphone every article told me one thing, it's impossible. They said it was impossible because I have upgraded to the 4.0.1 update. There are some methods out there that are asking you to downgrade your iphone and to do a bunch of worthless junk by moving files and stuff that might work. But let me tell you that this is actually INCREDIBLY simple. I wanted to initially get this to use at my school because of the insane firewalls to every website and was initially disappointed when they said tethering was impossible. I even went into Best Buy and was told the same thing.. Then a buddy at school literally showed me how I could jailbreak in a matter of seconds. I'll explain below how you can jailbreak and download your tethering software in a matter of 5 minutes.

Jailbreaking Your Iphone 3GS 4.0.1
Ok so to jailbreak your iphone, which is required to download the tethering software, it will take you 30 seconds. Open up your Safari app on your phone and click on the URL button at the top. When it lets you type it your own URL, type in jailbreakme.com. It will open up on a page and in a a few seconds it will ask you to slide to jailbreak. Obviously, you are going to want to slide to jailbreak.
Keep in mind that you can reverse this process at any time. Simply plug in your Iphone to your Itunes computer and click restore to factory settings.
So after you jailbreak your phone it will reset and kind of restart. Once back to your home screen you will see an app called Cydia.

Downloading Your Tethering Application
So now that we see Cydia, click on it and open it up. Click on the bottom right of the screen where it says search and search the term MyWi. It will come up and ask you if you are wanting to download. Yes, click the top right and download the application. It says that you will be on a 14 day trial but in all honesty you can expand the trial for as long as you want ( forever) with using a few other tricks.
Once you have downloaded the MyWi app, click on it and turn tethering on. It will be your first option and it is as simple as one touch. Now you have an absolute free wireless router to carry with you everywhere you go. Exciting huh?

I submitted the following about a month ago but did not get an answer. Perhaps I didn't post my email address, I'm not sure.

For what reason would you upgrade? Just stay where you are. I have no external knowledge of how to get this done.
Cordale, thanks for responding to my question. The reason I need to update is that several of my dowloaded application on the Iphone cannot be updated because of the older version on the phone. One is Documents to Go. I did an update on it without knowing I needed a newer version and it was wiped out from my phone and I can't get it back. But I don't want to loose tethering either.
